The Challenge
The client was a mid-stage healthcare SaaS company serving 200+ clinics across the US. Their patients were still scheduling appointments by phone, accessing lab results through a clunky fax-based workflow, and communicating with providers via unsecured email. They needed a modern, mobile-friendly patient portal that met strict HIPAA compliance requirements, integrated with their existing EHR system via HL7 FHIR APIs, and could handle sensitive PHI data with end-to-end encryption. Previous attempts with US-based agencies had stalled due to cost overruns and missed deadlines.
Our Solution
We placed a team of 3 — a senior Python/Django backend engineer with healthcare experience, a React frontend developer, and a security-focused QA engineer — who started within 10 days. The team built the portal using Django with encrypted-at-rest PostgreSQL storage, implemented role-based access control with audit logging for every PHI access event, created a responsive React frontend with accessible design (WCAG 2.1 AA), and integrated with the client's EHR via HL7 FHIR R4.
